What can bugs teach us about ourselves? Explore the world of insects and spiders during this fun, interactive talk... featuring live arthropods.
Kristie Reddick and Jessica Honaker are The Bug Chicks, entomologists and award-winning educators who teach about the amazing world of arthropods. They specialize in connecting STEM and social-emotional learning and use bugs as a tool to help people foster empathy for themselves, others and the natural world. Their work with students and teachers has led to projects with some amazing organizations: the U.S. Forest Service, Norman Borlaug Institute of International Agriculture, the National Ag Science Center, Microsoft, Nike, Morpho Institute and many more!
As research scientists, Kristie’s work focused on the biology and biodiversity of solifuge arachnids. Jessica’s work focused on aphids and integrated pest management in agroecosystems. They will highlight insect communication, adaptability and the incredible ways that bugs have shaped our human world. By the end of this program, the audience will see bugs and their relationship to them in a whole new way.
The STEM Speaker Series began in 2014 with a goal of communicating science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) research to all West Virginians.
This event is hosted by STaR Division: Science, Technology & Research at the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.
The event is supported by the National Science Foundation under Award No. OIA 2242771 and is free to registered guests.
